Traditional dimensional inspection methods depend on part-specific fixtures, which are expensive to design, manufacture, calibrate, and store. Hexagon’s Virtual Fixture solution eliminates this reliance by enabling dimensional inspections using generic fixturing devices that simply hold the parts on pins.  This approach enables metrology data collection in a “free state” or “flat” orientation, achieving precision with an accuracy of 0.5mm or better, even for large, thin sheet metal parts and assemblies. Virtual Fixture is also highly effective beyond sheet metal applications and can be applied to machined aerospace components and other complex geometries.

The solution ensures accurate dimensional inspection for precision-machined parts, multi-part assemblies, and components with strict tolerance requirements by leveraging advanced geometry morphing, gravity compensation, and non-linear physics modeling. Applying a Reference Point System (RPS) or metrology datums enables Virtual Fixture to replicate real-world clamping and alignment, making it suitable for flexible and rigid structures across various industries.
